Teeth Whitening in Fort Collins, CO

Professional teeth whitening from Dr. Brian Cox Dentistry ensures that your teeth are always as bright, beautiful, and healthy as they can be!

Professional At-Home Teeth Whitening

At Dr. Brian Cox Dentistry, we use a type of professional whitening system that uses custom-made trays and whitening gel only available through our office. A custom tray allows the whitening gel to flow into all of the spaces and contours of each individual tooth. As the peroxide in the gel breaks down, hydroxyradicals help whiten stained teeth. At-home professional tray whitening generally takes five to seven days, although you may notice results in as little as three to five days.

Using custom whitening trays is the most efficient and cost-effective method available for whitening your teeth. The trays can be used over and over again, all in the comfort of your own home and on your own schedule!

Providing you with at-home teeth whitening is an easy, pain-free process at our Fort Collins dental office. Simple impressions of your teeth are made during your initial appointment. Custom fit, clear plastic whitening trays are then fabricated for your upper and lower teeth. You simply apply the whitening gel to your custom trays and insert them over your teeth. We recommend an initial course of treatment of one whitening session per day for approximately five days. We then recommend repeating this whitening program every six months after each professional hygiene appointment.

When your initial whitening gel supply is depleted, we always have a fresh supply of whitening gel available for purchase at our office. As a courtesy to our patients who have chosen a custom whitening system from our practice, replacement gel syringes are always sold at our cost. We never profit from the cost of whitening gels or any other oral hygiene product at our office.

Is all whitening the same?

It is likely that you’ve probably heard of several expensive whitening procedures where you sit in a chair for an hour with whitening gel on your teeth, and a bright light shining on your smile. Expensive because you are sitting in a dental chair for an hour, or at some retail space at the mall. There is not a single research paper in dentistry that proves that shining a light on your teeth makes them any whiter than if you simply used the whitening material without the light! The light is unnecessary. Expensive marketing campaigns have led patients and dentists alike down the same road. This road was paved with your time and money. In fact, the light temporarily dries out your teeth during the procedure and so they “appear” whiter initially but as the teeth naturally rehydrate, the whiteness fades away.

What about over-the-counter whitening?

Often, patients will ask us if over-the-counter teeth whitening systems work. Our answer is yes and no. These products will whiten your teeth but not as effectively as professional at-home teeth whitening. Over-the-counter whitening strips are less effective because the strips are flat and do not conform to your tooth surfaces as well as the gel that flows around your teeth. The whitening strips will work over time, but your results will not be as rapid and as uniform as the results that you will see with whitening trays.

Is teeth whitening for everyone?

The truth is, most people come in to our Fort Collins dental office and ask us about teeth whitening. If a patient expresses that they are not happy with their smile, and specifically with the color of their teeth, we are happy to evaluate whether or not they would be a good candidate for teeth whitening. Some patients have genetically discolored teeth or teeth that have been damaged by medications. In these instances, the tooth color cannot be changed through whitening procedures because the tooth color is not just a surface stain that can be removed, but instead the color is inherent to the tooth. In the cases where whitening will not work, we can improve teeth color using processes such as bonding or crowns.
